Terms of Service

These terms govern your use of Check Local (the "Service"), operated by Check Local Ltd ("we", "us"). You accept these terms when you tick the acceptance box at sign-up, create an account, or use the Service. If you do not agree to them, please do not use the Service.

1. The Service

Check Local provides information about UK geographic areas drawn from public datasets, together with AI-generated summaries ("Rundowns"). The Service is a research tool provided for general information only. It is not financial, legal, surveying, mortgage, tax, conveyancing or estate-agency advice, and it is not a recommendation to move to, rent or buy in any area.

2. Your account

You may create an account to save shortlists, compare areas and access Moving Mode. You are responsible for keeping your password confidential and for activity that happens under your account. You must be 16 or older to register.

3. Moving Mode subscription

  • Billing. Moving Mode is billed monthly in advance via Stripe.
  • Cancellation. You may cancel at any time. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period; no pro-rata refunds.
  • Price changes. We will give you at least 30 days' notice by email before any price change. You may cancel rather than accept.
  • 14-day right to cancel. UK consumers have a statutory right to cancel within 14 days of first subscribing. Where you have begun using paid features, we may deduct an amount proportional to use already had.

4. Data and accuracy

Underlying data comes from third-party government and public sources (including ONS, Ofsted, DfE, Police.uk, EPC, HM Land Registry, Ordnance Survey and OpenStreetMap). We re-process and publish it in good faith, but we do not warrant that it is accurate, complete, current, or fit for any particular purpose, and — so far as the law allows — we are not liable for errors, omissions, delays or changes in that third-party source data. Each figure carries a freshness date and may be out of date by the time you read it. Do not rely on Check Local as the sole basis for any decision to move, rent, buy, choose a school, or commit money.

5. AI Rundowns

Rundowns are generated by an AI model from the area's own statistics. They are grounded but may still contain mistakes, oversimplifications or omissions, and should not be relied on as statements of fact. Where a Rundown and the raw numbers disagree, the raw numbers are authoritative.

6. No reliance — your responsibility

The Service helps you research areas; it does not make decisions for you. We make no representations or warranties, and assume no duty of care, in respect of any decision you take in connection with the Service. Before making any moving, tenancy or property decision you are responsible for (a) independently verifying anything that matters to you, at its original source, and (b) obtaining your own professional advice — for example from a surveyor, solicitor or conveyancer, mortgage broker, or financial adviser. Any reliance you place on the Service, or on a Rundown, is at your own risk.

7. Acceptable use

  • Don't scrape, hammer or reverse-engineer the Service.
  • Don't republish bulk extracts of our data.
  • Don't use the Service to harass, discriminate, or violate the law.

8. Intellectual property

Public datasets remain the property of their respective licensors. Our compilation, Rundowns, brand, design and code are owned by Check Local Ltd. You receive a limited, non-exclusive licence to use the Service for personal, non-commercial purposes.

9. Liability

Nothing in these terms excludes or limits any liability that we cannot lawfully exclude or limit. This includes death or personal injury caused by our negligence; fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation; and your statutory rights as a consumer, including your right under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 to a service carried out with reasonable care and skill.

Subject to that, and so far as the law allows: we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, or for loss that you could have avoided by verifying information you chose to rely on; and our total liability to you for all claims arising in any 12-month period is limited to the greater of (a) the total amount you paid us in that period and (b) £50. We consider these limits reasonable because the Service is provided for general information, much of the data is free and third-party-sourced, and you are asked to verify independently and take professional advice before relying on it.

10. Severance

If any provision of these terms (or part of one) is held by a court to be invalid, unlawful or unenforceable, that provision or part is treated as deleted and the remaining provisions continue in full force. Where a limitation or exclusion of liability is held unenforceable, it applies to the maximum extent permitted by law.

11. Termination

You may stop using the Service at any time. We may suspend or end your access if you materially breach these terms. We'll tell you why and, where reasonable, give you a chance to put things right first.

12. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. Disputes are subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales, save that you may bring proceedings in your country of residence if a non-waivable consumer right requires it.

13. Changes

If we materially change these terms we'll tell you by email or an in-app notice. Continued use after the change date constitutes acceptance.
