Business terms

For estate and letting agents, surveyors, removals firms and other businesses that register with Check Local.

1. Who can register

Businesses operating in Great Britain in a category we list: estate and letting agents (who must be members of an approved redress scheme), surveyors and removals firms, including sole traders where we say so. You must be authorised by the business you register, and you may only send links for properties the firm markets.

2. Checks and approval

We check who you are before your firm or any new branch goes live — your company number, your redress or professional membership, or for a sole trader your name and business address, depending on what you do. Approval is a check of identity, not an endorsement. If we can't approve your firm we will tell you why, and you can correct it and ask us to check again. We may suspend a firm whose membership lapses or whose details are wrong, and will tell you why.

If you choose a paid plan before we have approved your firm, you give your card details then, but you are not charged until we approve it. If our checks take longer than 30 days, the plan stays on hold, still uncharged, and we will tell you. If we do not approve your firm, the subscription is cancelled and you are never charged.

We may prepare a draft page for your firm from information you publish yourself (your website and public registers). It is not shown to anyone until someone authorised by the firm has claimed it, checked it and we have approved it. Claiming the page makes its content yours under section 6.

3. Agent links

  • You send only the parameters we document. We never fetch your pages and never store your listings.
  • The property details you send are shown as yours, and you are responsible for their accuracy.
  • Links are attributed to a branch only while the firm and branch are approved.

4. Paid listings

  • A flat fee per approved branch, monthly or yearly, charged through Stripe. The price is shown before you buy.
  • The first payment is taken when your firm is approved, not when you sign up.
  • No commission, no fee per lead, per click or per completion — ever.
  • Payment never affects area scores, grades, Readings, search or the place finder.
  • Ordering is published: Partner above Listed; within a plan, nearest office then alphabetical.
  • You can cancel at any time from your dashboard; your listing runs to the end of the paid period.
  • We may change what a plan includes or what it costs. We give you at least 30 days' notice by email before a change applies to you, and you can cancel before it does. Until then you keep the plan you signed up to.
  • Introductory offers (such as a founding discount) say how long they last when you accept them; after that the plan's normal price applies.

5. The widget

  • The widget only shows on websites you have verified as yours in your dashboard.
  • Each plan includes a number of widget loads a month per branch, shown on the plans page. Above that, the widget switches to its compact version until the next month; it never stops working on your pages.
  • The widget always shows that it comes from Check Local and that its scores describe the area, not your firm. You must not hide, alter or imply otherwise.
  • The widget shows public data about places. It never collects your visitors' details for you or for us.

6. Your content

You grant us a licence to show your firm's name, logo, colours, descriptions, branch details and the people you publish. You confirm each person you publish has agreed to appear, and that you have the right to use every logo, image and piece of text you add.

Once your firm is approved, changes you make in your dashboard are published straight away without a further check by us. You are responsible for everything you publish, including every change made after approval: it must be accurate, not misleading, and lawful, including consumer protection, advertising and data protection law. You agree to compensate us for any claim, loss or cost that arises from content you or your team publish.

We may remove or correct content that is inaccurate, misleading or unlawful, and suspend a firm that publishes it, without notice where we need to act quickly. We will tell you what we removed and why.

7. Data

We never give you a visitor's identity. Your dashboard shows counts. We process the business contact details of the people who manage your firm to run your account.
