Milton-under-Wychwood

Stone-and-slate cottages, a scatter of Cotswold-stone terraces, and drives with a Range Rover or two parked outside — this is the kind of village where the houses tell you the income before you've read a single statistic. Milton-under-Wychwood doesn't announce itself; it just sits there, unhurried, doing well.

The numbers back up the impression rather than create it. This sits among the more comfortable parts of the country on both income and deprivation measures, and the median age of 49 tells you it's not chasing young professionals or families in the early scramble — this is a place people move to once they've arrived, not on their way up. Housing here means detached houses bought outright: freehold dominates, detached is the default sale, and the typical property has gone for around £610,000 against a national median well under half that — this is a village priced for equity, not mortgages stretched thin. Against West Oxfordshire itself, prices still run noticeably higher, so even by local standards this is one of the pricier corners of the district. There isn't a rail station or a name-checked school in the picture here, so anyone weighing a commute or a school run will need to look at what sits around the village rather than in it — the practical essentials for daily life are handled elsewhere, and that absence is itself worth noting before you commit.

What you do get is space without crowding — seven green spaces for a population of under 700 is a ratio most towns would envy, even if the total hectarage is modest, and the low population density confirms this is a village in feel as much as name. The crime picture reads calmer than the headline safety grade might suggest at first glance: violent and sexual offences make up the largest single share of a fairly small annual total, which is common in rural areas where one or two incidents can swing the percentages, and the trend is flat rather than worsening. Broadband is strong, with the large majority of the village on full fibre, which matters more than it once did now that working from one of those detached houses is a realistic option rather than a compromise.
