Shipton-under-Wychwood

Stone-fronted cottages, a scatter of detached houses set back from the road, and a population with a median age nudging 53 tell you most of what you need to know before you've read a single statistic: this is a place people move to once, and then stay.

The practical picture here is unusually coherent for a village this size. Shipton Rail Station sits right in the village, with Ascott-under-Wychwood down the line too, so a commuter's life is entirely plausible despite the rural setting. Wychwood Church of England Primary School anchors the school-age end of things, and there's Windrush Valley School alongside it, though with only one state primary logged for the area, families tend to be settled here rather than arriving purely for the school run. Housing is dominated by detached freehold homes — thirteen of the fourteen recent sales were freehold, ten of those detached — and at a median of £650,000, well above both the West Oxfordshire figure and the regional average, a for-sale board here reads as an established-family or downsizing-with-equity purchase, not a first rung on the ladder.

Green space is genuinely woven into daily life rather than an afterthought — seven separate spaces across a village of under a thousand people is a generous ratio, and it shows in the unhurried pace: dog walks, a pub lunch, the kind of weekend that doesn't need planning. Full-fibre broadband reaches a strong majority of homes, which matters more than it used to now that fewer people are commuting daily. Health outcomes score at the very top of the scale, and safety sits there too, with crime running low and flat year over year — the one blemish, if you can call it that, is that violence and sexual offences make up a disproportionate share of what little crime there is, which is common in small, low-crime places where a handful of incidents skew the percentages rather than pointing to any real pattern of danger.
