Cwm-Nant-Yr-Odyn

Terraced rows dominate the streets here, close-packed and unmistakably valleys in character, with the sort of density that comes from a settlement built around a colliery rather than planned around a bypass. You won't find much passing trade or a café strip — this is a residential pocket, quiet in the way that former industrial villages in the South Wales valleys tend to be, and the housing stock reflects it: solid, older, freehold terraces rather than new-build estates.

The numbers back up that streetscape. Sales here run heavily freehold and terraced, with prices sitting a little below the Caerphilly borough median — a For Sale board on one of these streets is advertising a modest, established terrace, not a renovation project or a new development, since there's essentially no new-build activity recorded. On school-age families, the picture is thinner than you'd like on formal inspection detail, but Pontllanfraith Primary and Pentwynmawr Primary both serve the area as community schools, small enough that most parents will recognise names on the register. Commuting is where you'll want to do your own homework — there's no rail station logged for this pocket, so anyone working outside the immediate area is likely looking at bus or car rather than train.

The green space situation is tight — under half a hectare recorded locally — so this isn't a place for a Sunday stroll through parkland on your doorstep; you'd be heading further afield for that. What stands out instead is safety: the overall grade here is strong, and it's the standout feature against a backdrop of otherwise middling marks on health and schools. Look closer at the crime breakdown, though, and there's a genuine tension worth naming — violence and sexual offences make up close to two-fifths of recorded crime, and the area's crime rate sits markedly higher than the Caerphilly average, even as the overall safety grade reads as strong. That's the kind of contradiction that rewards a look at the raw breakdown rather than the letter grade alone: anti-social behaviour and public order incidents make up much of the rest, which often points to visible, low-level disorder rather than serious targeted crime, but it's not nothing.
