Pontllanfraith

Pontllanfraith sits along the valley roads of Caerphilly county, a run of semi-detached and terraced houses climbing the slopes with the kind of ordinary, settled look that doesn't try to impress anyone. It's the sort of place where you notice the hedges are trimmed and the cars are a bit older, where the pace is set by school runs and dog walks rather than anything you'd call a scene. The median age here, into the mid-forties, tells you this isn't a magnet for twenty-somethings chasing a nightlife postcode — and indeed the area's grading for evening life is the weak link in an otherwise solid report card, a town that empties out after the shops shut rather than fills up.

For house-hunters, a For Sale board here most often means a freehold semi — that's the dominant type and tenure by some distance, with detached homes fetching around £350,000 and terraces nearer £150,000, both close to the going Welsh rate for their type. The overall median price sits just above £210,000, almost exactly matched to the Welsh average and only a shade above what the parent county of Caerphilly typically asks, so you're not paying a premium to be here. Schooling is plentiful rather than selective in feel: four schools serve the town, including several community primaries — Penllwyn, Bryn, Pontllanfraith Primary — feeding into the large Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni for secondary, though the area's schools grade lands only around average, worth a personal look rather than an assumption either way. Public transport is respectable for a town this size, with over 60 local stops, though this is a place better suited to those who drive than those chasing a direct rail line.
