Upper Forge

Upper Forge is the kind of place you'd drive through without quite registering it: semi-detached houses in unbroken rows, pebble-dashed and privet-hedged, the sort of streetscape that hasn't changed much in decades because nobody's had much reason to change it. Around 450 people live here at a density that's a fraction of the Welsh average, which tells you plenty before you even get to the numbers — this is space, not stack. The average age sits just under 43, in line with the rest of Wales, so you're not looking at a young professionals' enclave or a retirement pocket. It's simply ordinary family Wales, unhurried.

Money-wise, Upper Forge sits in the less comfortable half of the deprivation scale nationally — income decile 2 is a plain signal that wages here lag well behind the Welsh norm, even though the area's overall deprivation ranking (decile 4) is less stark. Housing tells a consistent story: a semi-detached, freehold-dominated street, the kind where almost every For Sale board says the same thing — twenty of the twenty-two recent sales were freehold, and semis outnumber everything else four to one. Prices undercut both Swansea and the Welsh median by some distance, with a typical home going for around £176,000, comfortably below the £208,000 national figure and cheaper again than the county town up the road. Y.G.G. Gellionnen serves the local primary-age children, a community school with a couple of hundred pupils; Wales doesn't run an Ofsted system, so there's no letter grade to quote, but its presence is the practical anchor for anyone with young children weighing up the move.
