Swindon New Town

Terraced streets pack in tightly here, red-brick rows running off the town centre with the density of somewhere far bigger than its population suggests — this is inner Swindon, not a village edge, and the streetscape tells you that before any figure does.

The overall picture Check Local gives this patch is solidly average-to-good, a B across most categories, which is worth pausing on given the crime figure sitting underneath it: violence and sexual offences make up the largest single share of incidents, and the area's crime rate runs well above the Swindon unitary authority norm. That's the one grade that doesn't match the rest of the pattern, and it's worth knowing going in, even though the borough-wide "safety" grade held at B and the trend is described as flat rather than worsening. Schooling, by contrast, is a genuine strength for a family considering this street: Drove Primary, Holy Rood Catholic Primary, Lainesmead, Holy Cross Catholic Primary and King William Street CE are all rated Good, and St Joseph's Catholic College carries a solid Progress 8 score of 0.37 for those staying on to secondary. With nineteen transport stops serving a compact half-square-kilometre and full-fibre broadband reaching over nine in ten homes, this reads as a working commuter's patch rather than a car-dependent one, and a median age of 36.5 — younger than both the regional and national norm — fits a place people move into rather than retire to.

The property market spells this out plainly: terraced houses dominate sales, freehold is the norm over leasehold, and the median price of £215,500 sits sixteen per cent below the Swindon average and comfortably under the national figure too. A For Sale board here is advertising an entry point, not a trophy home — flats in particular go for roughly half what they'd fetch nationally, while semi-detached houses buck the trend and actually outprice the national semi. House prices have been rising gently over the past year and the longer direction is described as improving, so this isn't a market in decline, just one still priced for first-time buyers and value-conscious movers rather than for anyone chasing kerb appeal.
