Stourport-on-Severn

Stourport-on-Severn still wears its Georgian riverside origins plainly — terraced brick rows running down towards the water, a fairground that's been there longer than anyone can quite remember, and a high street that feels built for browsing rather than rushing through. It's the kind of place where the median age sits a full decade above the national figure, and you feel that in the pace: fewer buggies-and-briefcases mornings, more retired couples walking dogs along the basin.

Housing here reads as a town of terraces and semis rather than an estate of new-builds — freehold ownership dominates, new build makes up a small sliver of sales, and the mix of Victorian terraces and 1930s semis sets the tone on most streets. A median house price sitting close to Wyre Forest's own benchmark, and comfortably below the national average, tells you this isn't a commuter-premium town; it's a place people buy into for the town itself, not for a fast train out of it. Schools are a mixed picture rather than a uniform strength — Burlish Park, St Bartholomew's and Lickhill Primary are all rated Good, and Continu Plus Academy carries an Outstanding, but The Stourport High School's progress scores sit well below the national expectation, which matters if secondary results are high on your list.

Green space is where the town does its best work: with close to 90 hectares spread across dozens of pockets, including the riverside gardens that give the town its identity, weekends tend to happen outdoors — a walk along the Severn, a stop at the fairground, a wander back up through the town for lunch. Full-fibre broadband reaching close to four in five properties means working from one of those terraced houses is a realistic option, which matters more than it once did given the town's distance from major rail links. Safety is the one note that doesn't quite match the rest of the picture — violence and anti-social behaviour together account for over half of recorded crime, and while the overall safety grade sits in the same solid band as most other categories here, it's a shade below the town's otherwise strong environmental and affordability marks. Nothing in the numbers suggests a town in decline; house prices have been drifting upward gently rather than sharply, and crime trends are reported as flat rather than worsening.
