Stour Row

Stour Row is the sort of place where the houses do the talking: detached stone and brick sitting on their own ground, no terraces to speak of, and nothing new built in years. You won't find a parade of shops or a pub crowd spilling onto a pavement — this is a scatter of homes in open country, and the emptiness of the lanes is the first thing you notice.

There's no rail station listed for the village itself, and with only a couple of transport stops recorded, this is a place you reach by car, not commute from by train. The one school on record, Stower Provost Community School, is a small community primary with under a hundred pupils — the kind of school where your child is a name, not a number, though there's no Ofsted rating attached to judge it by. Property here runs almost entirely detached and freehold — eight sales in the sample, seven of them detached houses — with a median price around £461,000, comfortably above both the Dorset and national norms. A board on this street reads "family house, own land, cash buyer welcome," not "starter home."

Green space is modest in raw terms — two plots covering a quarter of a hectare — but that undersells it: at this population density, fifty people per square kilometre against a national average nearer 2,600, the whole village functions as your garden. There's no restaurant or pub named in the data, so eating out means driving to a neighbouring town rather than walking down the road. Broadband is solid enough for remote work, with full-fibre reaching seven in ten properties. The median age of 56 tells you who's actually here: settled, established households rather than young families chasing a starter home, which tracks with the schools grade sitting a touch below the rest of the picture — the one out-of-step note in an otherwise strong set of marks.
