Staunton on Wye

Staunton on Wye reads as farmhouses, paddocks and a scatter of detached properties along quiet lanes, the kind of place where the school run and the dog walk are often the same journey. This is deep rural Herefordshire, and it looks it — a population in the low hundreds, spread thin across the parish, with a median age pushing 55 that tells you this is a village of established households rather than young families arriving in a hurry.

The one school in the village, Staunton-on-Wye Endowed Primary, is rated Good and small enough that most parents will know the teachers by name; Eardisley CofE Primary sits close by as an alternative for the same age group. There's no rail station in the data, so this is a driving village, not a commuting one — the eight local transport stops point to buses rather than trains, and anyone tied to an office elsewhere needs to be comfortable with a car-based routine. Housing here is overwhelmingly detached and freehold, which is exactly what you'd expect a "for sale" board to say on a lane like this — no flats, no leaseholds, just houses on their own plots. Prices reflect it: a median sale around £398,750 sits well above the national and regional norms, and Herefordshire's own average, putting Staunton on Wye roughly 42% above the county typical price. Renting, by contrast, is cheaper than the national figure, which suggests the few rental properties that do exist are smaller or older stock rather than the grand detached houses that dominate sales.

Green space is present but modest in scale — three plots covering well under a hectare, so this isn't a village built around a sprawling park; the countryside beyond the boundary does the heavy lifting for walking and air. Day-to-day amenities aren't part of the picture here, so weekends are likely built around the surrounding villages and the Wye valley itself rather than anything within a five-minute stroll. The safety grade is the standout feature — an A, ahead of the affordability, connectivity and health grades that are already solidly B or B+ — yet it sits oddly against a crime rate that runs 176% above the Herefordshire average and a caseload dominated by violence and sexual offences. With just ten recorded incidents across the year in a village this small, a couple of events can swing the percentages hard, so the number is worth reading as noise on a small base rather than a pattern to fear, but it's the one figure that doesn't match the otherwise calm, high-grade profile.
