Summary of Rhiw Syr Dafydd
Detached and semi-detached houses line the streets here, the kind of solid, unremarkable stock that suggests people move in and stay. There's a settled, slightly older feel to it — the median age sits close to 43, in line with the rest of Wales — and the density is a touch lower than the Welsh average, so gardens and driveways have room to breathe rather than being squeezed in.
If you're weighing this up practically, the picture is coherent rather than spectacular. There's no rail station in the data, so this is a driving suburb, and the three schools on the books — Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Cwm Derwen, the larger Rhiw Syr Dafydd Primary School, and Islwyn High School for secondary — cover Welsh-medium and English-medium primary alongside comprehensive secondary provision, which matters more here than an Estyn rating would (Wales doesn't run the Ofsted system, so don't expect those grades). On price, the local median of around £232,500 sits comfortably above the Welsh average of £208,000 and is roughly 22% higher than the wider Caerphilly county borough figure — this is one of the pricier pockets of its own council area. Nearly every sale here is freehold, and detached homes dominate the market, which is the classic signature of a place built for families settling in rather than renting through.
The safety picture is the detail worth sitting with. The area carries a top-tier safety grade, and the overall six incidents recorded locally in the past year is a small number in absolute terms — yet the wider crime rate here still comes out well above the Caerphilly average, driven mostly by violence and anti-social behaviour categories rather than burglary or car crime. That's the one grade that breaks the pattern against an otherwise calm, well-connected, environmentally strong profile (the environment grade is the area's best), and it's worth reading as a reminder that small sample sizes can swing sharply — six incidents is not the same statistical weight as six hundred. Broadband is solid, with full-fibre availability above 87%, so working from home here is not a compromise.
