Porlock

Stone cottages, a steep wooded coastline behind, and a high street built for walking rather than driving — Porlock has the look of a place that settled into itself long ago and never felt the need to change. The shopfronts serve residents rather than passing trade, and the pace on the pavement matches the median age here, which sits well into the sixties rather than the national forties. This is not a village in transition; it's one that knows exactly what it is.

There's a single school in the village, St Dubricius Church of England VA School, a small voluntary-aided primary with under a hundred pupils — the kind of school where the head knows every family, though it's not one you'd choose for its Ofsted headline, since none is on record. There's no rail station to speak of, and the transport grade reflects a place built around cars and coastal buses rather than commuting; if you need a daily train to a city, Porlock will frustrate you. What it offers instead is space: a population density of barely 22 people per hectare against a national average well over a hundred times that. Houses here are mostly terraced or detached, sold freehold almost without exception — 19 of the last 20 sales went that way — and a terraced house will typically cost more here than the national terraced median, a sign that even the modest end of the market carries a premium for the setting.

The green space count — ten pockets of it, nearly six hectares in total — plus a health grade that comes out as the best-scoring measure in the whole profile, tells you how people actually spend their time: walking, gardening, getting outside rather than eating out, since the village doesn't lean on a restaurant scene to define itself. Crime is low in absolute terms, just a couple of incidents logged in the last year, though the mix within that small number is dominated by violence and sexual offences, and the rate sits markedly higher than the Somerset average — worth sitting with rather than alarming over, given how few incidents move that percentage a long way. The safety grade itself lands solidly in the "better than average" band, so the practical read is reassuring even where the raw comparison looks stark.
