Summary of Perthigleision
Terraced rows climb the valley side here, stone-fronted and close-packed, the kind of streets where the front door opens straight onto the pavement and the hills are never out of view. It's a settled, older-skewing corner of the Merthyr Tydfil valleys rather than anywhere reinventing itself — you sense that in the quiet rather than in anything dressed up for visitors.
The numbers on paper put this among the more affordable pockets you'll find anywhere in Wales, let alone the wider UK — a median sale price around £93,500 sits well under both the Welsh and national averages, and roughly 22% below the Merthyr Tydfil borough figure itself, which is already one of the cheaper councils going. Almost everything that sells is a freehold terrace or semi, which tells you what a "For Sale" board here actually means: a solid, owned-outright kind of home rather than a flat chain or a leasehold flat. For schooling, Ysgol Gymraeg Rhyd-y-grug and Ynysowen Primary serve the local children — both sizeable community primaries, Welsh-medium being part of the fabric rather than an add-on. Merthyr Vale Rail Station gives a rail link out of the valley, useful if your commute runs toward Cardiff or Merthyr town, though this isn't a place built around fast connections — it's a place you settle into rather than pass through.
The green grade here is the standout, an A that outranks nearly every other score attached to the area, and it shows in how much hillside and open land presses in around the houses — this is not a place short of somewhere to walk the dog or let the kids out. Health and transport both come in comfortably ahead of the national average too, at B+. But there's a genuine outlier worth naming plainly: violence and sexual offences account for very nearly half of all recorded crime here, well ahead of anti-social behaviour and public order in second and third place. It doesn't drag the overall safety grade down to alarming territory — it still sits at a respectable B — but it's the one figure that doesn't match the otherwise calm, green, unhurried picture the rest of the data paints, and it's worth sitting with rather than skating past.
