Perranwell Station

Detached stone and slate-roofed houses set back behind hedges, a scatter of farm buildings, and a request-stop station platform where the village name is best known — this is Perranwell Station in miniature, a hamlet more than a settlement, and it looks it.

There's a real rail line running through the middle of it, which is the quiet surprise here: Perranwell Rail Station gives you a direct platform without needing a car, unusual for somewhere this size and part of why the transport and nightlife grades sit at the top of the pack despite there being almost nothing to do on the doorstep. Perran-Ar-Worthal Community Primary School serves the immediate area, a modest community school with under 200 pupils rather than a big feeder. The median age of 54 tells you who you're likely to meet — this is a place of settled households and retirees rather than young families chasing commuter timetables, and the practical shape of life here reflects that: quiet, car-optional for the rail journey, but not built around school runs.

Green space is thin on paper — barely a tenth of a hectare logged locally — but that undersells a village surrounded by open Cornish countryside rather than a managed park; you walk out into fields, not into a gate. Eating out isn't really the offer here, and healthcare and shopping will mean going elsewhere. The pattern in the grades is otherwise consistent — health, environment and affordability all comfortably above the national average — with one exception worth naming plainly: safety grades as an A, yet the crime figures behind it show a rate more than four and a half times Cornwall's average. Look closer and the story softens: this is three recorded incidents in a year, in a population of just over a hundred people, so one or two events swing the percentage wildly. It's a statistical quirk of small numbers, not a lived pattern of violence, but it is the one figure that jars against the otherwise calm profile.
