Pentre'r Gaseg

Terraced streets run close together here, packed in around Swansea's northern edge, the kind of housing that was built for dock and steel workers and still carries that dense, no-frills layout. It's not a place that performs for visitors — there's no polished high street to speak of, just the everyday texture of a working suburb going about its business.

The numbers behind that texture tell a clear story: Pentre'r Gaseg sits in the second-lowest decile for deprivation in Wales and the very lowest for income, which puts it among the harder-pressed corners of the country even though the Check Local grades read a fairly even B across the board. That's the quiet tension worth sitting with — safety scores as a solid B, but the crime rate here runs enormously higher than the Swansea average, driven overwhelmingly by violence and sexual offences and a fair amount of shoplifting, which together account for more than half of all recorded incidents. Burglary and vehicle crime, by contrast, are minor players. It's the kind of pattern that rewards knowing which streets and which hours matter, rather than writing the whole place off.

Housing here is unambiguous: terraced houses dominate, freehold outnumbers leasehold two to one, and the median sale price of around £142,500 sits roughly a quarter below what you'd pay elsewhere in Swansea and well under the Welsh average. A For Sale board on one of these streets is advertising affordability first — flats here go for notably less than the Welsh norm, while semi-detached homes actually fetch a touch more than average, suggesting the handful of bigger houses hold their value even as the terraces keep the entry price low. Schooling is local and Welsh-medium options exist alongside English-medium community primaries — Ysgol Gymraeg Y Cwm sits among several primaries within reach, feeding through eventually to Cefn Hengoed for secondary. Public transport is thin, just a couple of stops recorded, so this reads as a car-and-foot suburb rather than a commuter one.
