Oystermouth and Brynau

Oystermouth's high street still runs down toward the seafront with the rhythm of a village that got absorbed by Swansea rather than built by it — stone terraces, independent shops, the kind of place where the pace visibly slows once you're past the roundabout. It attracts people who've either lived here for decades or arrived to spend the second half of life somewhere with a view; the median age sits close to 52, more than a decade above the Welsh average, and the streets read accordingly: unhurried, well-kept, more dog leads than buggies.

Housing here is dominated by detached and semi-detached houses sold freehold, which is what you'd expect looking at the terraces climbing the hill — this is a place people buy into rather than pass through. A median house price of £370,000 sits well above both the Welsh average and Swansea itself, roughly 84% higher than the city's typical figure, and detached homes here fetch £425,000 against a national median of £325,000. That premium buys you into the least deprived tenth of Wales on both income and general deprivation measures, which is about as comfortable a position as the country's index offers. Schools are thinner on the ground — only one is captured locally — but families further into Swansea's suburbs have options like Mayals Primary and St David's RC Primary within reach, both community-style schools with several hundred pupils between them.

The green space is modest in hectares but the sea does most of the outdoor work here — Oystermouth's real park is the promenade and the bay itself, and the restaurant and cafe scene along the front leans into that, seafood and casual dining rather than anything you'd call a food destination. It's a place for a walk along the water and a coffee afterwards rather than a night out; the nightlife grade reflects a quieter register than the rest of the area's scores, which otherwise sit consistently in the "above average for Wales" band. That's really the spine of the place: safety stands out as the strongest single grade, comfortably ahead of the Swansea-wide crime rate — about half the typical rate for the city — even though violence and sexual offences still make up the largest slice of the (small) crime count, as they do almost everywhere. Anti-social behaviour and public order offences follow some way behind.
