Norton St Philip

Stone-built cottages, a working pub or two, and a scatter of detached houses on generous plots — this is the kind of village where the housing stock does most of the talking before you've even parked the car. Norton St Philip doesn't try to look like anywhere else in Somerset: it looks like Somerset at its most settled, with a population so small that the place reads more like a hamlet with ambitions than a commuter dormitory.

The numbers behind the scene bear that out. With a median age pushing 52 against a national figure closer to 40, this is a village of people who've largely finished the school run rather than just started it — though Norton St Philip Church of England First School, rated Good, and Hemington Primary along the road give it a proper village-school anchor for those who do have young children. Property here leans heavily detached and entirely freehold, and at a median sale price of £585,000 — comfortably above both the Somerset and national medians, and sitting in the top decile for the country — a For Sale board on this street is signalling something closer to a lifestyle purchase than a starter home. The transport grade is strong, but there's no rail station in the picture; this is a place you drive from, not one you commute from by train.

Green space is modest in official hectares but the crime picture is the more telling number: a single-figure annual count that reads as almost nothing in absolute terms, even though the local mix skews towards violence and sexual offences, and even though the rate looks dramatically higher than the Somerset average in percentage terms. That's the quiet spine of this profile — a village so small that a handful of incidents shows up as a startling percentage swing, while the lived reality, borne out by the overall safety grade sitting comfortably above average, is of a quiet, low-crime place. Day to day, life here is shaped by what you bring with you — a car, a plan for groceries, an appreciation for pub food over restaurant rows, since this isn't a village built around a dining scene. Full fibre broadband reaching most premises means working from one of those stone cottages is a realistic proposition, which matters more than any high street here ever will.
