Newhaven has the look of a working port town that never quite finished becoming a seaside resort: terraced streets running down towards the harbour, cross-Channel ferry traffic mixing with the fishing boats, and a high street that feels functional rather than done up for visitors. It attracts people priced out of Brighton and Lewes who still want the coast, plus a fair number of long-term locals with roots in the port trade.
