Lower Pentre-Bach

Terraced rows line the streets here, small gardens front and back, the kind of housing stock that's barely moved hands in years — this is a settled corner of Merthyr Tydfil, not a place people pass through. With a population under a hundred and a median age approaching fifty, Lower Pentre-Bach reads as a place people have grown older in, rather than one attracting a fresh wave of arrivals.

The numbers on crime need context before they alarm anyone: the raw count sits low simply because so few people live here, but the rate relative to the surrounding council area is high, and violence and sexual offences make up the largest single share of what's reported. That's worth sitting with rather than dismissing, especially since it's the one grade that breaks from an otherwise unremarkable pattern — environment scores strongly, affordability and housing both come in comfortably above the Welsh average, yet safety lags behind them. On the housing side, what you'll actually find for sale is a freehold terrace, priced at a fraction of the typical Welsh home — the median sale here sits at less than two-thirds of the national figure — which puts Lower Pentre-Bach among the more affordable pockets of Wales, if also one of the more deprived on the wider WIMD measure, ranking in the third decile.

Day-to-day life here is unshowy. Full fibre reaches the large majority of homes, which matters more than it once did given how many residents are past typical commuting age and likely working from home or not commuting at all. Green space is generously provided relative to population, in line with the wider regional pattern, though there's little sign of a bustling café strip or restaurant row — this isn't a place built around eating out. Rent, where it applies, tracks exactly at the Welsh median, and council tax bands sit close to the national norm too, so nothing here springs a surprise on a budget.
