Highcross Road

Detached and semi-detached houses dominate the streets around Highcross Road, the kind of solid, three-bed family stock that gets bought and kept rather than flipped, and the front gardens and parked estate cars tell you this is a settled, middle-aged suburb rather than a starter-home churn zone.

The practical picture here is straightforward rather than flashy. High Cross Primary School sits in the community itself, one of several local primaries alongside Mount Pleasant, Glasllwch and Rogerstone feeding into Newport High School for secondary — Wales doesn't run an Ofsted system, so there's no grading to lean on, but the presence of a full spread of nearby community schools says this is a place people raise children rather than pass through. For commuting, Pye Corner and Rogerstone rail stations give you two route options without needing a car, though with only a dozen local transport stops in total, this reads as a suburb built around driving as much as trains. On the housing side, freehold ownership runs at 84%, detached houses lead the sales mix, and the median price of £218,000 sits close to the Welsh average — a For Sale board here is selling stability and space, not a bargain or a punt. Against Newport as a whole, prices run about 30% higher, so you're paying a premium to be in this particular pocket of the council area.

Green space is present but modest — six plots covering just under twelve hectares, enough for a regular dog walk or a Sunday kickabout rather than sprawling parkland. That domestic, unshowy rhythm extends to evenings out too: this isn't an area built around restaurants or nightlife, and the local grading reflects that quiet register directly. What stands out more is safety — Highcross Road's crime grade sits well above the norm, a genuine outlier against its otherwise solidly-average B-range marks elsewhere, even though the raw crime rate itself runs higher than Newport's borough-wide figure. That's not a contradiction so much as context: the area still compares favourably to its immediate surroundings even where the headline numbers look less flattering.
