Great Broughton

Great Broughton reads as stone-and-farmland England: detached houses on generous plots, a village primary, cars rather than pavements doing most of the work. It's the kind of place where the housing stock tells you who's around before anything else does — mostly older, settled households rather than a churn of renters, with a median age in the mid-fifties that marks this out as a place people move to rather than through.

The practical picture is straightforward if you're not chasing a daily commute. Battersby Rail Station serves the village, but this isn't a place built around a platform — it's built around the car and the school run to Kirkby and Great Broughton Church of England Primary, a Good-rated school that anchors the place for the handful of families here. Housing is overwhelmingly detached and freehold — of the recent sales sampled, the large majority were detached houses bought outright rather than mortgaged into flats or new-builds — and a For Sale board here is signalling a proper family house on its own land, not a starter flat. Prices sit well above the North Yorkshire average, and comfortably above the national median too, which fits a village where the housing turns over rarely and the buyers tend to have equity behind them rather than needing a first step up.

Green space is generous relative to the size of the place — eight separate pockets of it for a tiny population — so the outdoor life here is about the land itself, the walking country around Ingleby Greenhow and the wider North York Moors fringe, rather than a curated park circuit. There's no real restaurant or café scene to speak of in the data, which matches the picture of a village where you drive to Stokesley or further for a meal out rather than walking to one. Safety is the quiet strength here: the crime grade sits at the top of the scale, and although the raw numbers put the local rate startlingly above the North Yorkshire average in percentage terms, that's an artefact of a very small population — in absolute terms this recorded only a handful of incidents across the year, mostly the kind of low-level violence, criminal damage and anti-social behaviour categories that show up everywhere, not a pattern of serious local risk. Full-fibre broadband reaching close to four in five properties is a genuine surprise for somewhere this rural, and worth knowing if you're weighing remote work against the moors views.
