Featherstone

Featherstone still has the look of a town built around a pit that's no longer there: rows of terraced streets, a modest high street, and a population that skews towards families and older residents rather than young professionals passing through. It's a place people tend to be from, not a place they discover.

The practical picture is straightforward rather than glamorous. Featherstone Rail Station sits in the town itself, with Pontefract Tanshelf also within reach, so getting into Leeds or Wakefield for work doesn't require a car. Schooling is mixed rather than uniform — Featherstone Purston Infant School carries a Good rating, but the secondary options, including The Featherstone Academy, show negative Progress 8 scores, which matters more if you have older children than younger ones. Housing is where the numbers do the most talking: a median house price around £148,000 is roughly half the national figure, and terraced homes — the dominant property type here, overwhelmingly freehold — sell for well under both the regional and national terraced averages. A For Sale board on one of these streets is advertising affordability first and foremost, not aspiration.

That affordability comes with a trade-off worth sitting with. Crime here runs noticeably higher than in Wakefield district as a whole, with violence and sexual offences accounting for nearly half of recorded incidents — the single largest share by some distance, ahead of anti-social behaviour and shoplifting. The safety grade sits mid-table and the trend is flat, so this isn't a place getting visibly worse, but it isn't improving either. Against that, the environment and health grades are strong, and with over 30 hectares of green space spread across 21 sites, there's room to walk a dog or let children out without leaving the town. Full fibre broadband reaches the great majority of homes, which counts for more than it used to now that so much work happens from the kitchen table.
