Ewyas Harold

Ewyas Harold announces itself as a working village rather than a commuter dormitory — stone and brick cottages, a scatter of farm buildings, the kind of place where you recognise cars before you recognise faces. With a population barely touching 217 and a median age pushing 53, this is not somewhere young professionals wash up by accident. People tend to arrive here on purpose, usually later in life, and stay.

The practical picture is mixed in a way that rewards a close look rather than a headline. Housing is cheaper than the national and regional averages by some distance — the sample of recent sales, mostly semi-detached and terraced homes sold freehold, clustered around the low £230,000s, and property here still prices below the Herefordshire average overall. That affordability is real, but so is the constraint on choice: freehold-only, modest turnover, and few homes changing hands in any given year, so you're not browsing a deep market. Schooling locally means Ewyas Harold Primary, currently rated Requires Improvement — worth knowing if you have young children, since it's the only school actually in the village and the area's overall school grade (a B) is being pulled by wider catchment options rather than this one gate. Public transport is thin on the ground in the way rural Herefordshire generally is, yet the transport grade comes back as an A, which tells you the roads and bus stops that exist are functioning well for a place this size, even without a rail option to speak of.

Life here plays out mostly outdoors and close to home. Green space is limited in raw hectares, but the health grade is the standout in this data — an A, unusual enough to be the thing that defines the place more than any shop count or restaurant tally, of which there's little on record. This reads as a village where good air, low density, and a slower pace do more for wellbeing than amenities do. Crime is genuinely low in absolute terms — five incidents logged in the past year is a small number by any measure — but look at the shape of it and violence and sexual offences account for over four in ten of all recorded crimes, well above what you'd expect proportionally, even as the overall safety grade sits at A and the raw rate remains far below the Herefordshire average in isolation. That's the one grade that doesn't quite match the rest of the pattern, and it's worth sitting with rather than dismissing: a safe place on paper, with one category worth asking a neighbour about before you commit.
