Compton Martin

Compton Martin doesn't really have a high street in the way most places do — it's scattered houses, a church, farmland pressing in on all sides, and a population so small it barely registers as a place on a map rather than a scene from one. This is Mendip countryside, the kind where you recognise the cars before you recognise the faces, and where the median age sitting around 48 tells you most of your neighbours have been here a while and aren't planning on leaving.

There's no rail station listed for the village itself, and no secondary school either — Ubley Church of England Primary, a Good-rated academy with just 74 pupils, is the nearest schooling entity worth naming, which tells you plainly what this place is for: young families are not really the market here, or if they are, they're driving their older children out of the village daily. Four transport stops exist, which in a settlement this size means a bus shelter and a timetable you'll come to know by heart rather than a network. This is a place organised around the car and the postcode, not the platform.

Housing here needs to be read against Bath and North East Somerset rather than against the national picture, since that's the authority actually setting the tone — and against that backdrop this reads as ordinary rather than exceptional, a B+ across affordability and housing that puts it comfortably above the national grade-average without pretending to be somewhere exclusive. Income here sits at the very top decile nationally and deprivation is low — decile 8 — so this is a comfortable corner rather than a struggling one, populated by people who've done well enough elsewhere to choose quiet on purpose. Green space is sparse in the counted sense — one recorded plot of well under a hectare — but that undercounts the reality of a village surrounded by open Somerset countryside rather than hemmed into a formal park; the walking here is along lanes and field edges, not through gates.
