Compton Bassett

Compton Bassett is the kind of place where the streetscape barely qualifies as one — a scatter of houses, farmland pressing in on all sides, and none of the retail clutter that marks a village trying to be a town. With just over 270 people spread across it, you notice individual cars, not traffic. It attracts a settled crowd rather than a transient one; the median age here is 53.5, well above the national 40.4, and that shows in the quiet rather than in anything you could photograph.

There's no rail station or bus stop count worth building a commute around here, and that's the trade-off to sit with early: this is a drive-everywhere village, not a walk-to-the-platform one. Schools follow the same logic — Hilmarton Primary, rated Good, serves the area, a solid rather than exceptional option, and with an average Ofsted grade locally that lands close to the national picture rather than clearly above it. Housing sales are thin on the ground, just a handful a year, but they tell a consistent story: semi-detached freeholds dominate, nothing rented, nothing new-build, which is what you'd expect of a village that isn't being developed so much as maintained. At a median of £362,500 that's a premium of around 15% on the Wiltshire figure, putting Compton Bassett among the pricier corners of an authority that isn't cheap to begin with.

Green space is modest in scale — three plots totalling just over four hectares — which fits a place surrounded by open countryside rather than needing parks carved into it; you're not short of somewhere to walk, you just won't find it labelled on a council map. There's no restaurant or pub named in what's here, and no GP surgery either, so daily life leans on neighbouring villages and Calne or Chippenham for anything beyond the front door. What stands out instead is safety: the overall grade sits at B+, comfortably above the national average, but safety itself grades out at A, the strongest mark in the whole profile, and the numbers back it up — eight crimes logged in a year, with a rate that runs 82.6% below the Wiltshire average. That's the quiet spine of this place: everything else reads as solidly ordinary, but the sense of being left alone here is unusually strong.
