Bon-y-maen

Terraced rooftops climb the hillside in tight rows here, the kind of streets where net curtains are still a going concern and the corner shops outnumber anything you'd call a destination. Bon-y-maen has the look of a place built for work rather than passing trade — solid, unpretentious, a bit worn at the edges in spots. It's not styling itself for anyone; it just gets on with being lived in.

The numbers underneath that streetscape are blunter than the setting suggests. This is a suburb ranked among the most deprived areas in Wales on both income and the wider deprivation index, and the housing reflects it — terraced houses dominate, almost every sale is freehold, and the median price sits well under both the Welsh average and, notably, over a tenth below the wider Swansea figure. A "for sale" board here is advertising an entry point, not a lifestyle. Schools are limited to what's on the doorstep — Cefn Hengoed for secondary, Cwmglas and Ysgol Gymraeg y Cwm for primary, the latter a Welsh-medium option that says something about the mix of families still rooted here. None of Wales's Estyn ratings are flagged in what's on record, so judge them by reputation and a visit rather than a grade. With eight transport stops serving a population of only around 125 counted in this immediate patch, this reads as a walk-and-bus suburb rather than a rail-commuter one.

And here's the oddity that changes the read: on paper, the borough-wide grades score this place well across health, environment, connectivity and even nightlife — mostly A and B+ marks, better than the Welsh average implies for an area this deprived. Safety is the one grade that sags to a B, and the crime breakdown explains why: violence and sexual offences make up two in every five recorded incidents, well ahead of shoplifting and public order in second and third place. That's the quiet spine of this profile — a place that scores comfortably almost everywhere except the one category that tends to worry people most. Broadband is solid, with four in five properties on full-fibre, and green space is modest — three plots totalling under four hectares, enough for a local walk rather than a proper ramble.
