Bishop's Castle

Terraced cottages line the streets running down from the old market square, brick and stone mixed together, most of them a century or more old — the kind of place where you'll see more dog walkers and tradesmen's vans than school-run traffic. The median age here is 53, more than a decade above the national figure, and that shows in the pace: this is a village that has settled into itself rather than one still working out what it wants to be.

There's no rail station in the picture here, and the transport grade reflects it — if you need a daily commute by train, you'll be driving to find one, and that C for connectivity is the one grade that breaks the pattern in an otherwise comfortable set of scores. Schooling is more reassuring: Bishops Castle Primary School, a Good-rated academy with around 136 pupils, covers the early years locally, though you'd need to look further afield for secondary. On the housing side, the story is almost entirely terraced and freehold — eight of the last sales were freehold, five of those terraced houses — and at a median of around £215,000, this sits roughly a fifth below the Shropshire average and well under the national median too, which tells you a For Sale board here is advertising something more modest and more attainable than the county norm, not a period-property showcase.

Green space is genuinely part of daily life rather than a footnote — twelve separate green spaces packed into a small village footprint, more generous per head than both the regional and national averages, so a walk after work or at the weekend doesn't require getting in the car. The crime figures need a little unpacking before they alarm anyone: the headline rate looks high against the Shropshire average, but with only 37 incidents recorded over the year in total, small numbers swing the percentages around more than they would in a town, and the safety grade itself sits at the top of the scale with a flat trend — nothing sliding in either direction. Health provision scores highest of all the local grades, and nightlife, unusually for a village this size, scores well too, suggesting the pubs and social spots punch above what the population count would suggest.
