Allt-yr-yn

Allt-yr-yn sits on the high ground above Newport city centre, all solid semi-detached bays and the kind of streets where the cars on the drive tend to be a few years old rather than new. It reads as settled rather than transitional — a median age approaching 42, and a density noticeably lower than the Welsh average, which shows up as gardens and gaps between houses rather than terraces pressed against the pavement.

If you're weighing up the practical side, the picture holds together. St Marys Primary and Glasllwch Primary cover the early years, with Newport High School taking over for secondary — a full run through school years without leaving the suburb. Housing here leans heavily towards semi-detached freeholds, forty freehold sales against just six leasehold in the recent sample, and that dominance shows in the price gap: local semis are fetching around £311,000 against a Welsh average nearer £210,000 for the same type. A median house price of £264,000 sits comfortably above both the Welsh average and, more tellingly, 22% above the wider Newport figure — this is one of the better-off corners of the council area, not the cheapest way into the city.

That comfort comes with a genuine asterisk. Crime is the one grade that breaks the pattern here — everything else sits in solid B-and-above territory, but safety is flagged as a clear weak point, and the numbers explain why: the area's crime rate runs more than three times the Newport average, with violence and sexual offences alone accounting for over four in ten recorded incidents. It's worth sitting with that alongside the rest of the profile rather than either dismissing it or letting it override everything else — this is a place that looks and feels like a quiet, established suburb while carrying a crime rate that doesn't match the rest of its story. Green space is thin on the ground too, just a handful of small pockets rather than anything you'd build a weekend around, so day-to-day life here is more about the house and street than a park at the end of it. Broadband is a genuine strength, though — full fibre reaches the large majority of homes, which matters if working from home is part of the plan.
